I have one child who only eats white food…and bean burritos. Crazy. While away, we have been very strict with him and all our kids that they must eat the local cuisine. In one third world country, the kids ate on the street with the locals enough they got used to it (you could feed 4 kids for $3!!!). There we were with the street vendors, feeding them out of flimsy plastic bags and sitting on a dirty street. It’s tough to find macaroni and cheese in foreign countries, so our kids know not to ask. However, if we are lucky enough to stumble upon an American chain while away we always stop in.
My eldest is obsessed with hamburgers so we did make a contest on one long trip about finding the best hamburger – in Mexico! She found it…apparently the Sheraton hotel chain replicates certain recipes in each hotel no matter the location.
Happy Eating!!!
I have one word — Australia. Fish and chips are the all-time best food for satisfying picky eaters, and I don’t think we visited one restaurant where they weren’t on the menu in Australia! And Australia is perfect for kids — it’s all about animals, outdoor activities, beaches, and ferry rides.

We have a family vacation to Costa Rica planned for March. My son (7) will be fine, but I’m quite concerned about my daughter, who eats about 5 things (fortunately fruit is one of them) and is terrified of bugs! Her first encounter with a tarantula will be interesting! The bug thing we will have to deal with as we go, but I’m trying to figure out the food. She’s a carbohydrate addict and refuses to eat most protein, but gets really moody and difficult if I let her eat that way. We’ll see what happens!
Before my son was born I thought that there were no picky eater children just indulgent parents. Of course the joke was on me and I was blessed with a very “selective” eater.
Not only is my son a picky eater, we’re vegetarian as well. I used to think that if we were travelling and there was nothing else to eat he’d eventually get hungry and say, eat curry. No. I learned that my son can happily go days with eating very little and that his willpower is stronger than mine.
One of the best vacations we took recently was driving a campervan around the southern half of New Zealand because we had our own kitchen with us at all times and didn’t have to worry about finding restaurants or if the restaurant would have a vegi option.
